Summary of General Meeting (9-5-18)

It was fantastic meeting/seeing everyone at the General Meeting today! For those who were unable to join us, we primarily discussed what CAPS does and what CAPS is hoping to do in the coming school year. Our aspirations for the this year include: engaging the law school community with captivating lunch events and guest speakers; creating a formal, administration-approved Consumer Law Certificate (to go on your transcript); and perhaps the most exciting aspiration of all, potentially creating Berkeley's newest legal publication, the Berkeley Journal of Consumer Law (BJCL)! Here is a teaser of what our destiny could hold:

Whether this logo remains but a mere sparkle in our eye or will one day instead emblazon the letterhead of the nation's newest consumer law journal, is in our hands—your hands.

If any of the projects mentioned above sound interesting to you, please let us know! We also have a handful of lunchtime events in the works, including: (1) Privacy and Data Security (Event on California's new Consumer Privacy law);  (2) Law Students as Consumers (Event on Student Loans - Potentially with Financial Aid Office); (3) Access to Justice & Arbitration; and more...... If you would like to help plan one of these events—or any other event on a topic of your choosing—let us know!

We also received a lot of great ideas and feedback from students about events and programs they'd like to see, like a mentorship program, a series of lunch events to help define "Consumer Law," and even a podcast! We think these are great ideas. Many expressed interest in helping plan and execute these ideas, and so to that end....

Follow-up Planning Meeting

If you'd like to be more involved with CAPS please fill out the Doodle poll below and let us know during which lunch hour in the next two weeks you can meet! The goal of this meeting is to chart out and prioritize our goals for the coming semester/year, identify next steps, and start getting folks involved in making these things a reality.  Doodle Poll

Expanding the Consumer Law Curriculum

We are also working towards expanding the consumer law curriculum here at Berkeley, but we need your help. If you can spare a moment of your time, please fill out the brief survey below. As the Center for Consumer Law and Economic Justice considers what new courses to propose, student feedback on potential courses is vital. And as members of CAPS, your opinions are especially crucial.  Consumer Law Curriculum Poll

Wrapping Up....

CAPS is—at its core—a student group. As students, CAPS is in your hands. CAPS is, and will remain, what you want it to be. The more students are involved, the more we can accomplish. With the launch of the new Center for Consumer Law and Economic Justice, it could not be a more exciting time to be involved with CAPS and the consumer law field in general. So we strongly encourage everyone take advantage of the opportunity to engage in the uniquely strong consumer law community here at Berkeley Law!

That's all for now. Thanks for your time, everyone. We will circle back once we get an idea from the above poll about when we should plan our next meeting.

If you have any questions in the meantime, whether about CAPS, consumer law, or just law school generally, please feel free to reach out to us at our personal emails below and we would be more than happy to chat with you anytime! Thanks again, everyone.
